Jogo do bicho (the animal game) was created in 1892 at Vila Isabel Zoo in Rio de Janeiro. Over 130+ years it became part of Brazil's urban folklore — showing up in samba lyrics, cinema, literature and daily slang. For international readers, it's closer in cultural weight to the Italian Smorfia or the Chinese Zodiac numbers than to modern sports betting.

Jogo do bicho is a criminal misdemeanor in Brazil (Decree-Law 3,688/1941). This site is an educational/cultural resource. We do not accept or process bets from outside Brazil.

About Deu no Bicho

Deu no Bicho (Portuguese for "it came out on the animal" — the traditional call for a jogo do bicho result) is a reference publication on the Brazilian animal lottery. The Portuguese edition launched in 2024; the English and Spanish editions launched in 2026.

What we do not do

Who we are

Deu no Bicho is an independent editorial project based in Brazil. The editorial team is Brazilian; the English edition is written by editors fluent in English but rooted in Brazilian cultural context. We do not machine-translate — every English page is written from scratch by a human editor.

How we're funded

The Portuguese edition earns revenue from a display-affiliate arrangement with a Brazilian jogo-do-bicho platform (see the disclosure on any Portuguese page). The English and Spanish editions carry no affiliate revenue and are cross-subsidized by the Portuguese edition. This structural separation exists specifically so that the international editions can maintain their cultural-reference framing without commercial pressure.
