Jogo do bicho (the animal game) was created in 1892 at Vila Isabel Zoo in Rio de Janeiro. Over 130+ years it became part of Brazil's urban folklore — showing up in samba lyrics, cinema, literature and daily slang. For international readers, it's closer in cultural weight to the Italian Smorfia or the Chinese Zodiac numbers than to modern sports betting.

Scams in Brazilian lotteries — a field guide

Jogo do bicho occupies a legal grey zone in Brazil: playing is a minor misdemeanor (rarely prosecuted), operating is a formal criminal offense. Scam risk, however, is very real — the informal market attracts operators without accountability.

The legal status

Since Decree-Law 3.688 of 1941 (Contravention Law, article 58), operating jogo do bicho has been a misdemeanor punishable by 4-12 months imprisonment. The 2023 Betting Law (Lei 14.790) legalized fixed-odds sports betting (Bets) but did NOT legalize jogo do bicho. In 2024, Paraíba (LOTEP) became the first state to regulate it at the state level — a legal battle over federal vs. state authority is ongoing.

Red flags for scams

  1. WhatsApp "guaranteed number" sales. Anyone selling a "sure bet" for the next draw is running a fraud. Nobody can predict jogo do bicho outcomes.
  2. Fake bancas with clones of real websites. Verify the domain carefully; scammers register lookalikes (e.g. "bichodorio.com" instead of the legitimate operator).
  3. Payment before verification. Reputable operators — even informal ones — settle bets AFTER the draw is public. Any demand for upfront "guarantee" money is a scam.
  4. "Winning result" screenshots. Fake sites publish fake results to trick unaware players. Cross-check with an independent source (multiple Portuguese-language sites, or the official Caixa page for Federal draws).

Where NOT to bet

Never bet through unsolicited DMs, Telegram groups promising insider info, or apps that ask for banking credentials rather than PIX. The legitimate bicho market — for players who accept the legal grey zone — uses PIX for payments and only publishes results after the official Federal draw has closed.
